New Orleans’ higher trash fee is in effect. Seniors can check for relief

The residential sanitation charge is now $32.25 a month. Qualifying older heads of household can apply for a $10 reduced charge.

New Orleans’ residential sanitation charge rose from $24 to $32.25 a month on October 1. That adds $8.25 a month, or $99 over a full year.

The city’s September 24 bulletin confirms the council-approved rate and effective date. The sanitation fee page also lists the residential amounts.

Check whether your household qualifies

A reduced sanitation charge of $10 a month is available to qualifying heads of household who are 65 or older and meet household income eligibility requirements, according to the city bulletin. The benefit lasts 12 months and requires annual renewal.

The city’s application service directs applicants to print the form and mail it to the Sewerage and Water Board’s Special Accounts Unit. The current SWB application requires proof of age and income for all household members.

Age alone does not establish eligibility. Read the current form’s household income requirements before applying, and use its SWB contact information if you need help with the paperwork.
