Family Ties Annual Second Line 2026: a Sunday for community
A Sunday second line brings New Orleans together on foot: dressed-up club members, music in the street, and neighbors moving with the procession. This weekend, Family Ties Social Aid and Pleasure Club takes its turn in that living tradition. Here is what to know before you head out.
When and where is the Family Ties second line?
WWOZ lists the parade for Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 1–5 p.m. The published starting point is the Treme Center. Arrive a little early if you want to see the opening procession rather than catch up along the route.
The 2026 route and neighborhood stops
From the Treme Center, the route follows North Villere, Orleans, North Claiborne, St. Bernard, and A.P. Tureaud. Listed stops include Bullets Sports Bar and the Family Ties stop at 2630 Ursuline Street. A later break is marked for clubs only. The procession finishes at Lilly’s Lounge, 740 North Broad Street. WWOZ’s linked route sheet has the complete turns; check it again before leaving in case details change.
What “social aid and pleasure” means
The celebration belongs to a deeper New Orleans story. As New Orleans & Company explains, social aid and pleasure clubs grew from nineteenth-century benevolent societies that helped members with medical and funeral expenses while also creating space for social life. Their work joined practical care with community connection. The Historic New Orleans Collection traces today’s annual anniversary parades to that longer history of Black mutual aid and public celebration. The outfits, parasols, footwork, and music are expressions of a tradition carried by people and neighborhoods.
How to enjoy the afternoon
Let the procession set the pace. Choose a place along the published route, enjoy the passing club and musicians, and leave room for their movement. If you follow, keep a comfortable distance and be considerate when taking photographs. This is a neighborhood celebration, so treat porches, doorways, and businesses with the same respect you would on any other visit.
Planning your visit
Comfortable walking shoes, water, and sun protection make a long afternoon easier. Plan your ride with the moving route in mind, and arrange a meeting point if you come with friends. The scheduled finish is at a different location from the start. Check the weather and the latest WWOZ listing before setting out, especially after a rainy week. Come for the parade, give the club its space, and enjoy the city at walking speed.
